What is HypnoBirthing?

HypnoBirthing might sound ‘new age’ but from my own personal experience, it couldn’t be more different!  HypnoBirthing is simply a set of very logical steps that every woman should know about, that make a very big difference to the birthing process.

HypnoBirthing gives you so much more than a traditional antenatal class.  Regardless of where you are birthing, or how your birthing unfolds, the aim is to make the experience of your baby’s arrival joyful.  Each birth is going to take its own course and no-one can predict what journey your baby will take.  You will learn how to trust your body, your baby and the process of birthing.

Many parents (Dads in particular!) attend the first session with skepticism but when they learn that HypnoBirthing is based on medical and physiological facts, not some ‘airy fairy’ nonsense, they are ALL completely convinced.  You just need to have an open mind and the motivation to succeed.

If you don't know your options,

you don't have any!

HypnoBirthing is designed to help couples understand their options and equip them with a tool kit to make them feel empowered and excited, not fearful and unprepared.

The Benefits for your Baby

Perhaps even more significantly is the long term effect that HypnoBirthing techniques have on your baby.  If your birth is calm, gentle and drug free for you, it is also calm, gentle and drug free for your baby.  This little person then arrives in the world alert and with a mother who is alert and ready to receive him lovingly and attentively.  Also because HypnoBirthing babies have no birth trauma, they tend to be more calm, serene and content.  Reports say that they also seem to thrive better, sleep better and develop quicker.

Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, healthy, low-risk women as well as women who need medical assistance because of special circumstances, learn to dismiss fear-based stories, misinformation and birthing myths; and they are helped to see birth as normal.  They learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in the calm and gentle way that Nature intended.

HypnoBirthing teaches you to release all prior programming about birth, how to trust your body and work with it as well as how to free yourself of harmful emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and unyielding muscles.

“We started the course and within the first session it was so clear that there was another way - that there should be no other way.”

The HypnoBirthing Childbirth method is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing.  HypnoBirthing teaches you, along with your birthing companion, the art and joy of experiencing birth in a more comfortable manner.  You will learn to call upon your body’s own natural relaxant and thus lessen or eliminate discomfort and the need for medication.  When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.

You will be fascinated as you view HypnoBirthing films showing laboring mothers awake, alert and in good humor as they experience the kind of gentle birth that you too can know when you are free of the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome.  HypnoBirthing will teach you the art of using your own natural birthing instincts.  With HypnoBirthing you will be aware and fully in control, but profoundly relaxed.

When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing, you will not be in a trance or a sleep.  What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming, or focusing, that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire.  You will be conversant and in good spirits - totally relaxed, but fully in control.  Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body’s surges and your baby’s progress, but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree and the manner in which you will feel the surges.  You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to.  In this calm state, your body’s natural relaxant, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.

For most of their lives, women have been inundated with the negative stories of other women’s birth experiences.  Everyone, from their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends and even strangers, want to tell them the horrors of giving birth.  They have been conditioned to believe that excruciating pain is associated with labour and because of this, women today hold an unprecedented fear of giving birth.  This extreme fear causes their bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits their bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function.  The result is exactly what they feared most - long, painful birthing or unnecessary intervention.

People who are drawn to this method of childbirth have long been searching for a way to give birth confidently and as calmly, safely and gently as possible, whether they have chosen to birth in a hospital, a birthing centre, or at home.  Until HypnoBirthing, this kind of birthing almost seemed unattainable for the general population.

“When your mind is free of fear and tension, your body can be free of pain and will function as it was created to do so.”

Marie Mongan, founder of HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method

When your mind starts to believe birth is normal your body’s hormones will follow and help you experience a more positive birth.

Whatever way birth happens, it is your rite of passage into motherhood, and that passage is to be celebrated. Natural childbirth is a passage, caesarean birth is a passage, and birth with an epidural is a passage to be celebrated. That passage cannot be taken away from you. Every mother’s birth experience is valid, and an act of courage.”

Ananda Lowe (The Doula Guide to Birth)

“Although we didn’t get the natural, drug and intervention-free birth we had dreamed of, HypnoBirthing helped us to prepare and remain calm for any turn our birthing took.” Eloise
