Pregnancy Yoga

Yoga during pregnancy is slow, gentle and nurturing, but there is also an emphasis on building strength and stamina.  When the body is placed in a strenuous position such as a standing warrior pose, you will learn that through breathing and relaxation, the mind is able to stay calm and in control. Working with the breath in this way to stay calm and remain strong will support you through labour and birth.

With regular practice you will gain strength and flexibility needed for birth and learn how to open the body and get baby in the best position for a positive birthing.  Our pregnancy yoga classes are designed for those new to yoga, at any stage of their pregnancy.  Pregnancy yoga is also a great way to meet other expectant mums.  It is possible to start pregnancy yoga any time from 12 weeks.

Yoga has become very popular among pregnant women, teaching relaxation, rhythmic breathing, concentration and stamina building.  Many yoga exercises include movements that open the pelvis and help develop the flexibility and strength needed for birth preparation.  Yoga can improve physical co-ordination, balance emotions, increase energy levels and release stress and tension from the body and mind.

The ancient practice of yoga has restorative and healing energies that reach far beyond what we normally associate with yoga poses. During the childbearing years the practice of yoga offers many benefits to the changing body and emotions.  From the moment of conception, throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond, staying connected to our body, mind and heart is vital. Practicing yoga during this transforming time, can nourish and strengthen these connections as the creation of new life forms.

For many women, their love affair with yoga begins through pregnancy yoga classes but even if you have an established practice you will still benefit by learning how to adapt your yoga to meet the needs of your changing body and developing baby.

We also believe in nurturing the emotional and spiritual needs of the new mother.  In time, anyone who continues with regular practice becomes aware of a subtle change in their approach to life - through relaxing and toning the body and quieting the mind, a state of inner peace begins to emerge.

All levels are welcome, modifications and adjustments can be made to suit every body and we welcome complete beginners.

“My midwives complimented me on my impressive deep squatting skills as I was able to hold the positions for so long.  ALL thanks to yoga, my birthing experience was a very positive one.”  Elan
